This White Chocolate Peppermint Popcorn is the taste of the holiday season! Salty popcorn, sweet white chocolate, and minty candy canes create the most delicious seasonal snack. It's like a peppermint bark popcorn!

This recipe is inspired by the Angie's BOOMCHICKAPOP popcorn in a similar flavor. I've loved this store-bought popcorn for several seasons and I wanted to try making it at home. It couldn't be easier to make this delicious peppermint popcorn with just 3 simple ingredients!

Ingredient Notes

Here are all the ingredients you'll need to make this peppermint white chocolate popcorn:

ingredients to make white chocolate candy cane covered popcorn.
  • Lightly salted popcorn—You can buy pre-popped popcorn, or pop it yourself. I recommend lightly salted and light/no butter for the best flavor.
  • White chocolate chips—A melted white chocolate bar will also work.
  • Coconut oil—You may need just 1 tablespoon of coconut oil to thin out the white chocolate for drizzling.
  • Crushed candy canes—Pulverize until small chunks. You could also use crushed peppermint candies.

Substitutions

There are several ways to change up this popcorn. Here are some substitution suggestions:

  • Change the chocolate. Try using milk chocolate or dark chocolate.
  • Add mix-ins like m&ms, whole chocolate chips, crushed pretzels—you name it!

Step-by-Step Instructions

Be sure to read the recipe card below for the full recipe.

If your popcorn is not pre-popped, pop it and let it cool. Spread the popcorn across 2 parchment-lined baking sheets.

(1) Crush the candy canes in a food processor until they are small chunks.

(2) In a microwave-safe bowl, melt the white chocolate and coconut oil together in 30 second intervals. Drizzle over all the popcorn.

left: crushed candy canes in a mini food processor, right: drizzling white chocolate over popcorn.

(3) Sprinkle with the crushed candy canes.

(4) Use your hands or tongs to mix the popcorn and evenly coat in the toppings. Let it set for 15 minutes.

Break the popcorn into chunks and store in an airtight container for up to 2 days. Enjoy as a holiday snack or dessert!

Make Ahead

This peppermint popcorn can be made up to 2 days ahead of time. Keep it in a closed airtight container to avoid going stale. Keep on the counter in a cool spot to avoid the chocolate melting.

Batching

You can scale this recipe up or down depending on how much popcorn you want to make.

Expert Tips

Here are some of my top tips and tricks for perfect flavored popcorn:

  • Choose a "healthier" popcorn popped in coconut oil or sunflower oil instead of an overly buttery popcorn for the best flavor.
  • Add 1 tablespoon coconut oil to the melted white chocolate to thin it out for drizzling if it's too thick.
  • Change up the chocolate if you want! Try milk chocolate or dark chocolate for a true peppermint bark flavor.
  • Use candy canes or peppermint candies. Add other mix-ins like whole chocolate chips, pretzels, candies, etc.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is popcorn gluten-free?

Yes, typically. Ensure you check the specific brand of popcorn you are using, but typically popcorn is gluten-free.

What is the best brand of popcorn to use?

I like to use a "healthier" popcorn popped in coconut oil or sunflower oil for a less buttery texture. I like Skinny Pop or if you're in Ontario—Farm Boy's original popcorn is great and comes in a huge bag.

This chocolate peppermint popcorn recipe is the perfect sweet and salty snack for the holiday season! It's simple to make and sure to be a crowd pleaser with it's classic peppermint bark flavor.

  • 10 cups lightly salted popcorn, popped (125g pre-popped bag) choose light butter or no butter
  • 200 g white chocolate chips
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil, optional
  • 10 candy canes, crushed

Instructions

  • If your popcorn is not pre-popped, pop it and let it cool. Spread the popcorn across 2 parchment-lined baking sheets. Crush the candy canes in a food processor until they are small chunks.
  • In a microwave-safe bowl, melt the white chocolate and coconut oil together in 30 second intervals. Drizzle over all the popcorn. Sprinkle with the crushed candy canes.

Notes

  • I used a 125g bag of Skinny Pop—it is a pre-popped lightly salted non-buttery popcorn.
  • White chocolate chips or bars will work.
  • You can buy pre-crushed candy canes at bulk stores.
  • Popcorn is best enjoyed soon after making so it does not go stale.
