Jump to Recipe - Print Recipe

Re-create nostalgic flavors with this viral healthy dunkaroo dip made from greek yogurt, protein powder, and funfetti cake mix! Satisfy your sweet cravings with this protein-packed twist on a childhood favorite.

hand scooping dunkaroo dip with an animal cracker.

90's kids will remember the excitement of opening your school lunch box to see dunkaroos! Those buttery cookies dipped in the most deliciously sweet icing were always the highlight of my day. I wanted to recreate those same nostalgic flavors into a healthier high protein dunkaroo dip made at home!

This healthy dunkaroo dip recipe uses greek yogurt, light cool whip, protein powder, and some funfetti cake mix to perfectly recreate the flavor of the favorite school snack. Use some animal crackers or teddy grahams to dip and you'll be taken back in time and believe you're eating the real deal. This dip is the perfect recipe to make for a birthday party, baby shower, or a low calorie meal prepped treat for the week.

This recipe is a healthier choice since it's low sugar and there's added protein to help keep you satiated and hit your protein goals. With over 10g protein per serving, there's no tastier way to get in some protein!

Ingredient Notes

Here are all the ingredients you'll need to make this homemade dunkaroos dip:

ingredients to make healthy homemade dunkaroo dip.
  • Funfetti cake mix—This brings the classic dunkaroo cake batter flavor. We will heat treat the cake mix to ensure it is safe to consume raw.
  • Plain non fat greek yogurt—The healthy fat keeps you full and makes the bowl super creamy while adding protein. Use higher fat Greek yogurt if you prefer.
  • Light cool whip—thawed in the fridge for a few hours. The addition of cool whip lightens up the dip and takes away from the flavor of the Greek yogurt.
  • Vanilla protein powder—I use whey protein, but a plant-based protein will work too. I like to use the premier protein vanilla milkshake whey protein powder.
  • Vanilla extract to intensify the vanilla flavor.
  • Maple syrup, honey, agave, or sweetener of choice for just a little extra sweetness.
  • For dipping: Animal crackers, teddy grahams, graham crackers, or fruit for serving.

Substitutions

Need a swap? Here are some substitution suggestions:

  • Use flavored yogurt like vanilla greek yogurt or strawberry.
  • Different cake mix! Use a different flavor cake mix to change up the flavor of this dip. Make the chocolate dunkaroo dip with chocolate fudge cake mix and chocolate protein powder.
  • Change the protein powder. Try chocolate protein powder instead of vanilla. A cake batter or marshmallow flavored protein powder would be extra delicious!
  • Plant-based. I highly recommend the So Delicious Cocowhip as a dairy free replacement for Cool Whip. It is delicious. Use a plant-based protein powder, vegan yogurt, and ensure your dipping cookies are vegan.
  • Gluten-free. You can totally use a gluten-free funfetti cake mix in this recipe. Also ensure you use gluten free graham crackers to dip like Schar Honeygrams or Kinnikinnick animal crackers.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Be sure to read the recipe card below for the full recipe and nutrition facts.

(1) First, heat treat the cake mix to make it safe to consume. Pour the cake mix into a microwave-safe bowl and microwave for 30 seconds. Stir, then heat for another 30 seconds. Repeat until a probe thermometer measures 165ºF, about 90 seconds total. Set aside to cool.

(2) In a medium size mixing bowl, stir together the greek yogurt, cool whip, protein powder, vanilla extract, sweetener, and cake mix until thoroughly combined. Transfer to a clean serving bowl.

(3) Serve immediately or for best results and a thicker texture, refrigerate for at least 1 hour. Serve with animal crackers, teddy grahams, graham crackers, or fruit for dipping. Enjoy!

Storage

Keep the dunkaroo dip covered and refrigerated for up to 4 days. Note that the rainbow sprinkles from the cake mix may bleed color over time. You could also freeze the dip in a freezer safe container for up to 2 months. Thaw in the fridge overnight and give it a stir before enjoying again!

Expert Tips

Here are some of my tips and tricks for a great cake batter dip:

  • Thaw the cool whip in the fridge overnight before mixing the dip.
  • Let the heat treated cake mix cool before mixing into the dip to avoid melting the cool whip.
  • Use the rest of the cake mix to make my funfetti cookie recipe.
  • Refrigerate the dip for at least 1 hour or overnight for the best texture. This will allow the cake mix to hydrate and thicken.
  • Dip with animal crackers, teddy grahams, graham crackers, or fruit for the ultimate dunkaroo re-creation.
  • This recipe is the perfect healthy dessert to meal prep for the week. Have a few scoops after dinner each night!

Frequently Asked Questions

What protein powder should I use?

I like to use a vanilla whey protein powder because I think it tastes the best. You can use any vanilla protein powder that you like in this recipe—whey, casein, soy, pea.

Do I have to chill the dip before serving?

You can enjoy this delicious treat right after mixing, but the flavor and texture will be much better if you let it chill in the fridge for at least 1 hour. This allows the cake mix to hydrate and thicken the dip.

This high protein dunkaroo dip is the perfect healthy treat to make for a party or meal prep for the week. You will never be able to tell that you're getting 10g of protein per serving because it tastes just like the nostalgic dunkaroos you remember from childhood!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup funfetti cake mix 130g
  • 1 cup plain non fat greek yogurt 245g
  • 1 cup light cool whip 90g
  • 1 scoop vanilla protein powder 30g
  • 2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoon maple syrup or sweetener of choice
  • Animal crackers, teddy grahams, or fruit for serving

Instructions

  • First, heat treat the cake mix to make it safe to consume. Pour the cake mix into a microwave-safe bowl and microwave for 30 seconds. Stir, then heat for another 30 seconds. Repeat until a probe thermometer measures 165ºF, about 90 seconds total. Set aside to cool.

  • Serve immediately or for best results and a thicker texture, refrigerate for at least 1 hour. Serve with animal crackers, teddy grahams, graham crackers, or fruit for dipping. Enjoy!

Notes

  • I use Premier Protein Vanilla Milkshake flavored whey protein powder. You could omit the protein powder if you wish and the dip will taste just as good.
  • I recommend refrigerating the dip for at least 1 hour so allow the cake mix to hydrate and thicken the texture. It also tastes delicious cold.
