This Gluten-Free Garlic Bread is perfectly crispy, garlicky, and gluten-free! A loaf of your favourite gluten-free bread or baguette is slathered in a homemade garlic butter and baked to perfection in just 30 minutes, making this the perfect side dish for pizza or pasta night.

I've photographed this recipe "Texas Toast"-style using sliced bread because I like the ability to have double sided garlic butter pieces. It's crispy on the edges and a little soft in the middle. 😍 But if you have a favourite gluten-free baguette, feel free to slice it in half lengthwise for a more traditional garlic bread.

Want to know how you can make the freshest homemade garlic bread that just so happens to be gluten-free? Keep on reading!

Why You'll Love This Recipe

  • Simple ingredients. That you likely have on-hand.
  • Easily customizable. Use fresh or pre-minced garlic, sliced bread or a baguette, or make it cheesy garlic bread. It's all up to you.
  • Great for kids and adults. Kids will love this "Texas Toast" style garlic bread.
  • Hands-off cooking. Toss it in the oven and smell the goodness.
  • Stores well. Garlic bread keeps well and reheats deliciously. If it lasts that long, that is.

Ingredients

Here is everything you'll need to make this gluten-free garlic bread:

ingredients to make gluten free garlic bread.

Gluten-free sliced bread or baguette: Use what you have on hand! Sliced bread will give more of a "Texas Toast" style, and a baguette will give a more traditional garlic bread texture. I used Schar Artisan White Bread for these photos.

Salted butter: If you're using unsalted butter, add ¼ teaspoon salt.

Olive oil: Gives the bread a nice golden colour when baked and makes the garlic butter quite spreadable.

Fresh garlic: I think fresh gives the best flavour, but in a pinch you can definitely use pre-minced garlic.

Fresh parsley: Gives nice colour and freshness to the garlic bread.

Garlic powder: Just a little bit amplifies the garlic flavour without overpowering.

Parmesan cheese: This is optional, but I love the little bit of flavour and saltiness it gives the garlic bread.

Substitutions

There are many ways to change up this gluten-free garlic bread depending on your preferences. Here are some substitution suggestions:

  • Dairy-free or vegan. Use your favourite plant-based butter and omit the cheese.
  • Cheesy garlic bread. Add ½ - 1 cup of shredded mozzarella cheese to the garlic butter mixture. Top with extra parmesan before serving.
  • Use sliced bread, baguette, pitas, etc.! You can slather this homemade garlic butter onto whatever you like.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Be sure to read the recipe card below for the full ingredient list and instructions for how to make gluten-free garlic bread.

(Prep) Preheat the oven to 400ºF.

(1) In a small bowl, mix together all ingredients except the bread.

(2) Spread the mixture onto each side of the bread until all slices are coated. If using a baguette, slice lengthwise and spread along the inside.

(3) Push the slices together and wrap the bread in tin foil. Place on a baking sheet and bake for 20-25 minutes until the garlic is cooked.

(4) Unwrap the bread and broil on high for 1-2 minutes until crisp. Keep an eye on it!

Remove from the oven and serve immediately. Enjoy with gluten-free pizza, pasta, and more!

How to Serve

There are so many ways to enjoy your gluten-free garlic bread. It is best served hot, right out of the oven. Here are some suggestions:

  • Enjoy on pasta night with my vegan spicy vodka pasta, or this creamy dairy-free mushroom sauce.
  • Have a side of garlic bread with your gluten-free Detroit style pizza.
  • Serve as an appetizer or side dish at a BBQ gathering.
  • Add to your game day snack spread with some gluten-free mozzarella sticks and jalapeño poppers.

Make Ahead

Prepare the bread with garlic butter and wrap in tin foil. Place in the fridge for up to 2 days, then bake as directed.

Storage & Freezing

Storage: Leftover baked garlic bread can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for 2-3 days. Re-crisp in the oven or air fryer at 400ºF for a few minutes.

Freezing: Prepare the bread with garlic butter and wrap in tin foil. Place in the freezer for up to 2 months, then bake the loaf as directed plus a few minutes. To reheat individual slices, bake at 400ºF for 10-15 minutes.

Expert Tips

Here are some of my top tips and tricks for successful gluten-free garlic bread:

  • Ensure the butter is nice and softened so it is spreadable.
  • Check that the garlic is sufficiently cooked before unwrapping and broiling.
  • Watch the top of the bread while broiling! It can brown fast!
  • Serve immediately. Garlic bread is best when served fresh out of the oven!
  • Freeze unbaked garlic bread so you always have some on hand.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Texas Toast garlic bread gluten-free?

No, as the bread itself contains wheat. That's why we make our own "Texas Toast" style garlic bread here, 100% gluten-free and 100% delicious.

What type of gluten-free bread should I use?

For these images I used Schar Artisan White Loaf. My first recommendation would be to use any gluten-free white loaf or baguette. Udi's, Little Northern Bakehouse, or Canyon Bakehouse all have good white loaves. You could also use a gluten-free baguette like this one from Schar, Aidan's Gluten Free, or Udi's. Or of course any homemade gluten-free bread.

Can I use pre-minced garlic?

Of course! Pre-minced garlic is so great for convenience. Use about 1 tbsp.

Can I make this garlic bread dairy-free?

Yes! Use your favourite plant-based butter and omit the cheese.
