Why You'll Love This Recipe

  • Perfect for game day & Super Bowl parties.
  • Make-ahead friendly (even better after chilling).
  • No baking required.
  • Customizable heat level. It tastes like a jalapeño popper!
  • Crowd-pleasing, classic flavors that are customizable the way you like it.

Build your game day spread with my high protein buffalo chicken dip, white chicken chili, air fryer jalapeño poppers, blender salsa, cottage cheese spinach artichoke dip, and more.

Ingredients & Substitutions

Here is everything you'll need to make a football shaped cheese ball:

ingredients to make a football cheese ball.
  • Cream cheese: Use full-fat cream cheese for the best texture, but low-fat cream cheese can work too.
  • Sour cream: Adds tang and creaminess—plain Greek yogurt is also a good substitute.
  • Old cheddar cheese: Shredded sharp cheddar provides bold flavor, though mild or white cheddar can be used instead.
  • Pickled jalapeños: Add heat and acidity—fresh jalapeños or canned green chiles work as substitutes.
  • Green onions or chives: Both add mild onion flavor and are interchangeable.
  • Garlic powder & onion powder
  • Hot sauce: Adds extra spice—adjust to taste or omit for a mild cheese ball. I like to use TABASCO.
  • Pecans: Create a crunchy coating—walnuts or crushed crackers work as alternatives.
  • Cooked bacon: Adds smoky, salty flavor—extra nuts can be substituted.
  • Havarti or mozzarella cheese: Mild, sliceable cheeses work best for the football laces.

Variations

  • No jalapeños: Swap with chopped roasted red peppers for a milder version.
  • Extra spicy: Add cayenne pepper or finely diced fresh jalapeño.
  • Nut-free: Skip the pecans and coat with extra bacon and crushed crackers.
  • Different cheese: Sharp white cheddar or pepper jack both work well.

Equipment

This recipe requires minimal equipment. An electric hand mixer is helpful for combining the ingredients, however you can mix it by hand. You will also need some plastic wrap to form the cheese ball, a serving dish, and a cheese knife for spreading.

Best Crackers & Dippers for a Cheese Ball

This football cheese ball pairs well with:

  • Butter crackers or wheat crackers.
  • Pretzel crisps or pretzel sticks.
  • Pita chips.
  • Celery sticks, carrots, cucumber, or bell peppers.

Pro tip—offer a mix of crunchy and fresh dippers for balance.

Make Ahead & Storage

This cheese ball can be made up to 2 days in advance. Store it tightly wrapped in the fridge and wait to add the coating and cheese laces until just before serving for best texture and presentation.

Stored in an airtight container, leftovers will keep in the fridge for 3–4 days.

Expert Tips

Here are some of my top tips and tricks for a great cheese ball:

  • Soften the cream cheese fully before mixing to ensure a smooth, lump-free cheese ball.
  • Chill the cheese ball before coating so it holds its football shape and the topping adheres evenly.
  • Finely chop the coating ingredients for better coverage and a cleaner look.
  • Add the cheese laces just before serving to keep them crisp and prevent drying out.
  • Let the cheese ball rest at room temperature for 30 minutes for the best flavor and spreadable texture.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you keep a cheese ball from getting too soft?

Make sure to chill it thoroughly before coating, and let it sit out only about 30 minutes before serving.

Can I freeze a cheese ball?

Freezing is not recommended—cream cheese can become grainy once thawed.

What’s the best cheese for a cheese ball?

A combination of cream cheese for structure and shredded cheddar for flavor creates the best texture and taste.

This football cheese ball recipe is a guaranteed hit for Super Bowl parties, tailgates, and casual game day gatherings. It’s festive, delicious, and easy to make!
