Ingredient Notes
Here is everything you'll need to make this strawberry blackberry banana smoothie:
- Frozen banana: Banana adds a wonderful creaminess to this smoothie. To freeze bananas, I like to peel them, cut into quarters, and freeze in a large plastic bag. With this method I add 4 banana quarters to this smoothie.
- Frozen strawberries
- Frozen blackberries
- Milk of choice: Use more or less depending on your preferred thickness. I use unsweetened almond milk, oat milk, or coconut milk.
Optional Ingredients
Amp up the nutrition of this smoothie with any of your favourite add ins! Try some of these:
- Greek yogurt: 1-2 large tablespoons
- Protein powder: Chocolate or vanilla would taste great here!
- Collagen powder
- Chia seeds: Blend them in or sprinkle them on top. 1-2 tablespoons
- Flax Seeds: 1-2 tablespoons
- Leafy greens: 1 large handful of spinach
- Nut butter: 1-2 tablespoons of almond butter or peanut butter is great
- and more!
Substitutions
There are many ways to change up this smoothie depending on your mood. Here are some substitution suggestions:
- Banana. If you don't like banana in your smoothies, feel free to omit it and add about ½ cup ice. The smoothie will be less creamy and more icy, though.
- Sweeter. If you like a sweeter smoothie, add 1 tablespoon of honey or maple syrup.
- Don't like blackberries? Use blueberries instead!
- Milk. Any milk, dairy-free or not, will do. A fruit juice would also give nice flavour.
- Add booze. 1-2 oz vodka or rum is my pick for a delicious frozen fruity cocktail!
- Want a smoothie bowl? Reduce the milk to ½ cup. Use the tamper of your blender to mix and stir until smooth. Add a small amount more liquid if needed. Blending will take several minutes.

Storage
Note that this smoothie recipe is best served and consumed fresh after preparing.
Should you find yourself with leftover smoothie, pour it into an ice cube tray and freeze until solid. Transfer the cubes to a plastic bag or airtight container and freeze until you're ready to have it. Re-blend with more milk for a thicker smoothie or place the cubes in a mason jar and let them thaw until liquid.
For a Crowd
If you're hosting a crowd of people, this recipe is easy to scale up (depending on your blender capacity). Double the recipe for two large smoothies or 4 smaller smoothies, as pictured here. Use your judgement on the amount of alcohol, if adding. Generally 1-2 oz per person.
Expert Tips
Here are some of my top tips and tricks for a successful smoothie:
- Use only frozen fruit. This will result in the coldest, thickest, creamiest smoothie.
- Add the liquid slowly. You can always add more to thin it out.
- Use a high powered blender. I love my Vitamix. This is the model I have and it creates the smoothest smoothies.
