Ingredient Notes

Here are all the buffalo chicken dip ingredients:

ingredients to make buffalo chicken dip.
  • Shredded chicken breasts from a rotisserie chicken.
  • Cream cheese—just half a brick, unlike other recipes.
  • Shredded cheddar cheese—shred it yourself, it will melt better than the pre-shredded stuff.
  • Garlic powder, salt, and black pepper
  • Buffalo wing sauce
  • Ranch dressing—ranch goes so well with buffalo sauce! A little adds a nice flavor to the dip.
  • Chopped green onions for topping
  • For dipping: Corn tortilla chips, carrots, celery sticks, ruffle chips, baguette slices, etc.

Substitutions

If you don't have a rotisserie chicken, you can boil and shred 2 chicken breasts yourself.

If all you have is Frank's RedHot instead of buffalo sauce, you can use that and add 1 tablespoon of white vinegar to create a buffalo flavor.

Can I make this dairy free? You can try using dairy free cream cheese and shredded cheese, but I fear it will not melt the same.

Serve this dip with your favorite tortilla chips, ruffle chips, crackers, sliced baguette, or sliced vegetables.

Make Ahead & Storage

Make ahead: You can mix the dip and place it in the dish the day before you want to serve it. Cover with foil and refrigerate, then bake as directed.

Storage: Leftover dip can be stored in the fridge in an airtight container for 2 days. Reheat again in the oven or microwave until warm.

Freezing: While I have not tested freezing this dip, it should work to mix the dip, place it in a foil tray, cover and freeze for up to 1 month. Bake as directed, plus possibly a few minutes longer.

Expert Tips

Here are some of my top tips and tricks for successful buffalo chicken dip:

  • Finely chop the rotisserie chicken meat!
  • If you're not using a rotisserie chicken, boil and shred your own chicken breasts.
  • For a larger dip, use the leg meat from the rotisserie chicken and double all other ingredient quantities.
  • Shred the cheddar yourself so it melts nicely.
  • If you only have Franks Red Hot sauce, add 1 tablespoon of white vinegar for the buffalo sauce taste.
  • Broil the dip at the end for a crispy top.
  • Serve with your favorite dippers for the most delicious bite!
