Ingredient Notes
Here are all the ingredients you'll need to make this black margarita:
- Granulated sugar: This is for the rim. Use salt if preferred, or I like a mixture of sugar with a little bit of salt.
- Fresh blackberries: These add a touch of sweetness and dark color to the drink. You could use a blackberry purée if you have one. Omit if you don't have them or don't like blackberries.
- Tequila: I use blanco tequila, or use any other spirit of choice.
- Orange liqueur: I use triple sec or cointreau.
- Fresh lime juice: Fresh is best!
- Activated charcoal powder: For the black magic effect! See safety note below.
Activated Charcoal Safety: Activated charcoal is very absorbent and can interfere with medications, including the birth control pill. Enjoy this drink several hours before or after consuming your medications to be safe. If you are concerned, omit the charcoal in this drink.
Substitutions
There are several ways to change up this cocktail. Here are some substitution suggestions:
- Silver or gold tequila? I like to use silver tequila because it has a smoother, lighter taste. If you like gold, go for it!
- Change the spirit. Try vodka, gin, or your favourite spirit.
- Adjust the sweetness. I don't include any simple syrup in this recipe. If you like it sweeter, add some simple syrup, maple syrup, agave nectar, or honey. Start with 1 teaspoon and adjust to taste.
- Fresh or bottled citrus? Fresh lime juice is always best, but bottled will do in a pinch.
- Add some edible glitter for a little sparkle as you stir the drink.

Make Ahead & Storage
Note that this cocktail recipe is best served and consumed fresh after preparing. It should not be made ahead of time, nor stored for later.
Batching
Multiply the ingredient quantities by however many drinks you'd like to make. Instead of adding to a shaker, add ingredients to a large pitcher. Stir well and add some ice for dilution. Pour into rimmed glasses and add blackberries or a lime wedge to serve.
Expert Tips
Here are some of my top tips and tricks for a successful margarita:
- Smash and macerate the blackberries well for the most flavor. I also recommend straining this drink if you don't want the seeds in it.
- Use the juice of a fresh lime, or bottled lime juice in a pinch.
- Shake until cold and frosty.
- I like to rim only half of the glass so I have an option to drink without the sugar/salt.
- Chill your cup in the freezer for a few minutes for an extra cold drink.
- Do not consume activated charcoal within a few hours of taking medications.
- Add some edible glitter for a fun sparkly addition.
