  • A delicious fall drink. Perfect for Halloween & the fall season!

  • Uses common bar ingredients. The margarita is a classic cocktail. If you like them already, you definitely have most of the ingredients.
  • Activated charcoal gives this margarita a dark magic vibe. And blackberries add a subtle sweetness and flavor.
  • Made in 3 minutes. Just shake and enjoy!
  • This recipe is naturally gluten-free, dairy-free and vegan.

Ingredient Notes

Here are all the ingredients you'll need to make this black margarita:

ingredients to make a black halloween margarita.
  • Granulated sugar: This is for the rim. Use salt if preferred, or I like a mixture of sugar with a little bit of salt.
  • Fresh blackberries: These add a touch of sweetness and dark color to the drink. You could use a blackberry purée if you have one. Omit if you don't have them or don't like blackberries.
  • Tequila: I use blanco tequila, or use any other spirit of choice.
  • Orange liqueur: I use triple sec or cointreau.
  • Fresh lime juice: Fresh is best!
  • Activated charcoal powder: For the black magic effect! See safety note below.

Activated Charcoal Safety: Activated charcoal is very absorbent and can interfere with medications, including the birth control pill. Enjoy this drink several hours before or after consuming your medications to be safe. If you are concerned, omit the charcoal in this drink.

Substitutions

There are several ways to change up this cocktail. Here are some substitution suggestions:

  • Silver or gold tequila? I like to use silver tequila because it has a smoother, lighter taste. If you like gold, go for it!
  • Change the spirit. Try vodka, gin, or your favourite spirit.
  • Adjust the sweetness. I don't include any simple syrup in this recipe. If you like it sweeter, add some simple syrup, maple syrup, agave nectar, or honey. Start with 1 teaspoon and adjust to taste.
  • Fresh or bottled citrus? Fresh lime juice is always best, but bottled will do in a pinch.
  • Add some edible glitter for a little sparkle as you stir the drink.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Be sure to read the recipe card below for the full recipe.

(1) Add 3 blackberries to a cocktail shaker and muddle until you have a blackberry puree.

(2) Pour in the tequila and orange liqueur. Squeeze the fresh lime juice and add the activated charcoal powder. Place 4-5 ice cubes in the shaker and carefully close the lid.

(3) Shake for 30-60 seconds until frosty.

(4) On a small plate, mix the sugar with a pinch of activated charcoal powder to create a black sanding sugar. Rub half a lime across the rim of a short glass. Roll the glass in the sugar. Set aside.

(5) Add fresh ice to the rimmed glass and strain the margarita into the glass.

Slide 3 blackberries or a lime slice onto a cocktail pick or toothpick and lay across the top of the drink for garnish. Enjoy!

Make Ahead & Storage

Note that this cocktail recipe is best served and consumed fresh after preparing. It should not be made ahead of time, nor stored for later.

Batching

Multiply the ingredient quantities by however many drinks you'd like to make. Instead of adding to a shaker, add ingredients to a large pitcher. Stir well and add some ice for dilution. Pour into rimmed glasses and add blackberries or a lime wedge to serve.

Expert Tips

Here are some of my top tips and tricks for a successful margarita:

  • Smash and macerate the blackberries well for the most flavor. I also recommend straining this drink if you don't want the seeds in it.
  • Use the juice of a fresh lime, or bottled lime juice in a pinch.
  • Shake until cold and frosty.
  • I like to rim only half of the glass so I have an option to drink without the sugar/salt.
  • Chill your cup in the freezer for a few minutes for an extra cold drink.
  • Do not consume activated charcoal within a few hours of taking medications.
  • Add some edible glitter for a fun sparkly addition.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is tequila gluten-free?

Yes, most distilled alcohols are in fact gluten-free and safe for celiacs due to the distillation process. As always, read the label on your tequila.

I don't like tequila. How can I make this drink?

You can swap the tequila for any other neutral spirit such as vodka or gin.

Can I make this without the activated charcoal?

Yes absolutely! Your drink will have a slightly purple hue due to the blackberries and won't be as dark, but it will still taste like a delicious margarita.

Quick question, if I used 6 fresh blackberries
▢2 oz tequila or spirit of choice
▢1 oz orange liqueur I use triple sec
▢1½ oz fresh lime juice from 1 lime and I strained it
would it taste the same without using activated charcoal? If not please let me know. Thanks
